Volkswagen ID.4 Charges Ahead at Volkswagen of Sanford
ID.4 Overview:
The new Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV is the first of the brand's long-range electric vehicles to be sold stateside. Offering the best of the traditionally powered Volkswagen SUVs, including enthusiastic driving dynamics, bold design and the latest technology, both inside and under the hood. These include long-range Electric Vehicle (EV) capability coupled with three years of complimentary (no-cost) rapid charging from Electrify America.
The ID.4 was loaded with engineering, technology and value and is "designed to win the hearts of those ready to go electric-and fall in love with Volkswagen again," said Scott Keogh, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. "It drives like a GTI, has the packaging of a Tiguan and the purpose of the Beetle. All the best things about VW in one package," he said.
Powering the VW ID.4
The Volkswagen ID.4 SUV is based on the electric drive architecture found in the VW Group MEB platform. The company explains this is a return to their roots because its electric motor-generator is located at the vehicle's rear, just like the engine in the original VW Beetle.
The Motor (electric vehicles have motors, not engines!) is powered by a battery pack made of 288 cells in 12 packets, positioned in the underbody to create a low center of gravity for optimal drive dynamics and road manners. Being positioned so low also helps provide better weight distribution from the batteries housed in an aluminum structure bolted to the vehicle's frame. We know that's a mouthful but trust us, it works.
At launch, the initial versions of the ID.4 vehicle will feature an 82 kWh battery and a rear-mounted AC permanent-magnet synchronous motor producing 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque. According to EPA estimates, Volkswagen estimates that the initial batch of rear-wheel-drive (RWD) 82 kWh models will have a range of 250 miles on a full charge.
As a bonus to new Volkswagen ID.4 EV owners, and as a way to put their minds at ease regarding their new electric vehicles, will come complete with three years of complimentary fast charging by Electrify America. The ID.4 is chargeable using alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) fast charging capabilities. The included onboard charger allows the ID.4 to top off the battery for around 33 miles of charge in an hour. A full charge is possible in about seven-and-a-half hours at a home or public Level 2 Charger. Finally, a DC fast-charger station with 125 kW charging can do the deed, bringing the vehicle from five to 80-percent in about 38 minutes.
EV Car Chassis Matters:
Riding on a high-strength steel platform, the Volkswagen ID.4 utilizes a tried and true strut-type suspension with lower control arms, coil springs, telescopic dampers and a front-mounted anti-roll bar. There's a multi-link axle with coil springs at the rear, again with telescopic dampers and a rear-mounted anti-roll bar. It boasts a curb-to-curb turning radius of 33.5 feet, which compares favorably with other compact SUVs.
Rather than using disc brakes at all four corners, the VW ID.4 splits the difference, but with good reason. Since EVs rely on regenerative braking, the company has found that having disc braking at the rear is less effective than drum brakes. As a result, the ID.4 features disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes at the rear.
Electric SUV
A Volkswagen wouldn't be a Volkswagen without the VW logo front and center. This ID.4 is no exception and proudly flaunts its heritage front and center. But then these looks deviate into a thoroughly modern representation of where the brand is heading. Large LED headlights flow rearward, giving a hint as to the vehicle's aerodynamics. Models available with the ID.4 Statement package add an illuminated VW logo and the light line stretching out from it.
Along the side flanks, clean flowing lines work to give the ID.4 a decidedly futuristic look. A low, aerodynamic greenhouse leads out to a rear-mounted spoiler. It moves so cleanly that it has a low drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd. By the numbers, it slots in just below the VW Tiguan, 180.9 inches overall length, 64.4 inches high, and 72.9 inches wide.

Inside matters:
The inside of the ID.4 continues the modernity theme and quite spacious besides. It features 99.9 cubic feet of total passenger volume, which is comparable to the slightly larger but non EV car, the VW Tiguan. There are 30.3 cubic feet behind the second row in the cargo hold, and 64.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded forward.
Safety Features:
No car or SUV is worth its weight if it comes up short in safety. The ID.4 uses both passive and active safety systems to protect both the vehicle and its occupants. Start with six standard airbags; passengers are protected from almost every angle. Underneath, a replaceable aluminum panel protects the battery against the road. Speaking of batteries, they are automatically disabled, should the vehicle be involved in a serious accident.
The ID.4 is loaded with Volkswagen's standard IQ.Drive advanced driver assistance technology. The suite includes Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian monitoring; Blind Spot Monitor; Rear Traffic Alert; Adaptive Cruise Control; Lane Keeping System; Travel Assist and Emergency Assist.
